Avoiding Plagiarism Using MLA Style (9^th ed.)

Students will be able to identify:

• How UCF defines plagiarism.
• When you need to cite sources.
• The difference between a quote and a paraphrase.
• When to quote and when to paraphrase.
• How to signal to readers that you are incorporating the work of other researchers using MLA style.

Understanding the Information Cycle

30 minutes
Objective: Given a research assignment and topic, students will be able to select the appropriate type of information source based on knowledge of the information cycle.

Selecting Articles for Academic Assignments

30 minutes
Students will learn how to:

• Identify different types of articles
• Recognize tools you can use to find academic articles
• Interpret the intended purpose of each type of article
• Understand how to distinguish which type of article is best for a given assignment.

Recognizing a Research Study

30 minutes
Students will be able to:

• define research,
• identify the structure or parts of a research study,
• identify authoritative works,
• identify publishing or distribution status,
• identify sponsoring organizations.

Focusing an Information Search

30 minutes
Objective: Using advanced search strategies in a library database, students will be able to demontrate how to focus an information search by applying strategies that include:

• exact phrases,
• subject terms,
• combining subject terms and keyword terms,
• and truncation.

Evaluating Web Sites

20 minutes
Students will be able to:

• utilize lateral reading techniques.
• identify the authority of information providers.
• evaluate the accuracy of claims.
• identify bias in coverage.
• evaluate the depth and completeness of coverage.
• evaluate currency based on your information needs.

Creating a Search Strategy

20 minutes
Students will be able to:

• identify the process to develop a search strategy,
• identify keyword terms,
• select appropriate resources,
• identify techniques for effective searching.

Conducting a Literature Review

30 minutes
Students will be able to:

• Contextualize research questions within the scholarly conversation.
• Differentiate between types of literature reviews.
• Identify how to locate appropriate sources for inclusion in a literature review.
• Synthesize research from multiple sources.

Citing Sources Using MLA Style (9^th ed.)

30 minutes
Students will be able to:

• cite journal articles, books, websites, and videos
• create in-text citations
• format Works Cited lists
